Kristela was born in Latvia, where she was a top player throughout her junior career. As a junior, she played in many international tournaments all over Europe. Her family moved to England in 2013 where she trained and played before university. In 2017, she was recruited to play for a top junior college in the nation, Cowley College, where she played no. 1 singles and doubles. She was named ITA Region Ill Rookie of the Year and played doubles at the NJCAA Small College National Championship. To continue her college career, she transferred and played in the top lineup at Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, where she graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in marketing.
